    Abstract
This paper proposes the optimal design of a renewable hybrid energy system consisting of solar, wind energy with battery storage suitable for application in remote areas. The study investigates the possibility of reducing the overall size of a system already installed in a school in Maji Mazuri, Kiserian. The main aim of the study is to reduce size of the renewable systems and reduce energy storage. The study investigates the effects of reducing load demand on the size of the system components. DC LED lamps are proposed for all the lighting needs of the school in order to reduce the load demand especially during peak hours. The results show that the optimized system is able to meet the load demand. Homer software is used in the design and optimization of the renewable hybrid power system.
